Bio
Conner Carey is a Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter who writes cinematic story-songs. Their debut single, "The Legend of Agnes the Cowboy," is a spaghetti-western folk ballad about Agnes, a cowboy driven to become an outlaw, as told through the eyes of a grieving mother.
Drawing on the narrative country of Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" and the dramatic catharsis of Florence + the Machine, "The Legend of Agnes the Cowboy" transforms ordinary grief into cinematic legend.
Press Release
Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Conner Carey releases their debut single, "The Legend of Agnes the Cowboy."
The song introduces Agnes, a cowboy driven to become an outlaw, told through the eyes of a grieving mother. It draws on the narrative country of Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" and the dramatic catharsis of Florence + the Machine.
The track pairs a western arrangement with session fiddle from Rebecca McBride and drums from Chris Tsaganeas, and is produced and mixed by Gerry Hirschfeld.
Agnes takes her name from Carey's maternal grandmother, who lived with bipolar disorder in the 1940s and 50s, decades before any real treatment for it existed. The single is the first public release from a forthcoming 15-track concept album structured as a hero's journey, following Carey's own diagnosis and recovery through mythic storytelling.
"Agnes is the hero I couldn't be for myself. She kicks down the door, sweeps me into her arms, and takes me away from the violence and trauma. It's a reclamation."
The single is accompanied by a music video shot on the Pacific Northwest coast.
